Google's Restructuring Suggestive of Aquisitions in Near Future

Larry Page and Sergie Brin
Larry Page and Sergie Brin

Co-founder of Google, Larry Page, is now the company’s CEO, and he hit the floor running. It looks like Page took a chapter from Steve Jobs’ book. He’s tossing out the old company structure, pushing long-tenured executives out and putting new faces behind the search engine giant. It would appeear that Page would like to see all of Google’s businesses run on their own. He would like to see in place a Senior Vice President in charge operating like a CEO. No need for management or committees, the SVP would be held accountable for each Google product, and report directly to the one man board, Larry Page.

The Restructuring

Google remains one of the most successful technology companies on the planet, and the most powerful. With Apple and Facebook's presense growing maybe now is a good time for restructuring. Google essentially owns search and if you have an Android, Google owns that too!

The guy who put that Android in your hand, Andy Rubin, is now senior vice president of mobile. He's the boss of Android, Google's mobile operating system. By the way, it is now more popular than the iPhone. The success of the Android is Page’s reasoning for decentralizing the company. In order for Google to keep it’s dominance a guy by the name of Vince Gundotra, made a presentation about how Google is going to get killed by Facebook if it doesn't figure out "social" soon. He used a painting titled "Emerald Sea;"as the headliner of the presentation and Page was sold. I think he may not have liked the idea of Facebook barreling over Google like the sea over a lonely ship. Gundotra is now a SVP. Another competitor of a lesser nature, Twitter, apparently offered one of Page’s head honchos a pretty hefty salary because Sundar Pichai just received an awesome $50 million to “stick around” says Page. Sundar Pichai is the man behind ‘Chrome’, Google’s web browser. That is one rather important browser, I would say, to have such a shiny price tag. And a rather important man behind it as well, Pichai is now a SVP.

Shuffling Folks Around....

We should also bring mention Youtube, a $1.6 billion purchase Google made in 2006. Now that Youtube has posted a profit, the man behind it’s success is Salar Kamangar is now SVP. Another winner in the shuffling of seats was Alan Eustace. He used to be SVP of engineering and research, but under Page's reign, he has become SVP of search, the most wildly successful product in all of technology. At Google, Susan Wojcicki is known for being the person who pushed the company to launch “AdSense“, Google's off-site ad network. With the AdSense success story she finds herself SVP of ads. (She’s also famous for being the woman who rented her garage to Larry Page and Sergey Brin back in the early days. Susan’s sister ended up married to Sergey.) Most of the people stayed or were ‘moved around’ to comfort the new Senior Vice’s but one face is now gone. Jonathan Rosenberg, formerly SVP of product management, was the first top Google executive shown the door after Larry's reorganization. The reported reason was Larry Page wants to be his own SVP of product management. The one clear message from Page has been that he doesn’t like the way Google's management structure was organized. He thinks it made Google slow to react to threats like Facebook, so out the door behind Rosenberg is where Shona Brown, famous for having designed Google's management structure, found herself.

Possibility of Aquisitions?

The new structure behind Page’s changes are built around YouTube and Android, chances are Page is on the prowl, for other acquisitions such as Foursquare (Dennis Crowley) and Twitter (Jack Dorsey). Crowley and Dorsey might just come away with the biggest paychecks when Google's billions come calling.
